[You know how a guilty person will suddenly get super helpful to make up for it?
Well, this is pretty much Kaido today. In the last two hours he's done his laundry even though it wasn't his turn (his clothes were really muddy), done the dishes, and decided to try tinkering with the door to his room, that he'd always been too lazy to take care of even though it squeaked.
It's partly hiding something, and partly him needing to just keep busy to avoid thinking about things.
You'll find him putting the door back on its hinges, some oil swipes on his face]

When she sees Kaido still working on his door, the feeling that something's not right only solidifies. She pauses for a moment, considering whether it would be better to leave him alone for now, but decides to approach him. She wasn't completely sure something was even wrong yet, after all.]
Tadashi, I'm back. Seems like you've been busy.

Oh, hey Mari.

Thank you for doing so much around the house today. I was surprised, though- I didn't think it was your turn?

[Okay, he's admitting it easily enough]

[At least he's sheepish about it?]

Then where did you go? You were gone for quite a while.

You can't... go off and do something like that without telling anyone. That area is dangerous; you could have gotten hurt, and we'd have had no idea what happened to you.

[He pauses again, and his face is darker, now, sadder]
... he said something about feeling like he was cursed... and then I realised... if I'd disappeared down there too... he'd have thought it was his fault.
no subject
...If you really understand, then don't do something like this again, alright? He's not the only one who'd be devastated if you were gone. [That's as close as she can bring herself to voicing her thoughts.]

[He got so used to only being second best for you that he didn't stop to consider your feelings properly.
And the realisation that you both care about him like this is shaking him to the core]
I just-- [He just wanted to help, to try making you two happy, and instead he's fucked up again... nothing he does ever helps, no matter how much he trains, no matter how much he does. No wonder he's always been second best.
... he's shaking a bit]
no subject
It's okay... I know you meant well. [Really, she does. She's known him long enough to understand that taking risks and going to these kinds of extremes is his way of caring. But just knowing that won't keep him any more safe.] I'm sure Atsuro knows that too.
no subject
... and then he gives a sobbing laugh]

Tadashi?

And he's thankful to you for initiating it.
... very slowly, he's going to bring both his arms up and around your back and return that hug]

But... even if it was just for right now, he wanted her close. So she tightens her hold on him again, and finds herself starting to smile a little against his shoulder.]

He was about to break a minute ago but he's a bit calmer now... who knew that such a simple gesture could be enough for him to express how much he cares? For months he'd be running himself increasingly thin just trying to keep up, to find even a single thing he could do for you, and then for Atsuro too... and nothing he did was ever good enough... but maybe... maybe something like this... can be good enough... at least a little]
... gods I've been an ass. [He'll rest his chin on your hair] ... I'm sorry, Mari. I'm sorry for everything.
no subject
... I have... missed you though. [It's out before she can stop herself, slipped through in her relief. It might be unfair of her to think that way, when he uprooted everything half a year ago to come back and help her. But she's very happy right now, and wants him to know that.]

[...]
Thanks for having me around anyway.

[... light snort]
Hell, it's better than what it was when I actually had one.
no subject
...As far as I'm concerned, at least, you and Atsuro are my family.

[He lets go of the hug so he can look you in the eye]
I actually found something.

I didn't find... any bodies or anything. It was pretty deep, so if they'd been attacked there--or stuck--there'd have been something.

How did Atsuro take hearing all this? Is he alright?
no subject
[sigh] ... I only realised when I was talking to him that more hope without any real answers might just make things worse... but he seems okay.
[There's... something like pained fondness that flashes on his face, before he looks up with a more determined expression]
I'm gonna keep looking. If they expand the band reach like they said, we can check further away. And now we know there's people out there... well we might have a lead on where they are.
no subject
Of course, we'll all keep looking. [Team Evolution might be dangerous, but if Atsuro's parents were with them... well, at least something good might come out of having run into them.] But I trust you'll let me know before running off on your own again somewhere.
